James McBRIDE was the first to come from Ireland.

The McBrides came from Donegal County, Ireland. It is believed that they settled in Orange County, North Carolina, in the section that is now Alamanee County was divided. (Guilford).

Isaiah McBRIDE, brother of James McBRIDE, uncle of Isaiah McBRIDE, was born Sept. 3, 1794; died Feb. 6, 1858. He was buried at Beech Grove, Orange Co., Indiana. He made one trip back to Ireland. He was never married.

James McBRIDE-- born Oct. 23, 1796, <NC> died Mar. 2, 1864. He came from Ireland with his parents, as a small baby. There were nine babies on the ship, and all died of seasickness on the way except James McBRIDE and two others. He married Polly Milloway, who was born September 19, 1801; and died October 7, 1875. Both are buried at Beech Grove, south of Paoli, Indiana. The couple had twenty one children, 18 of whom lived to be grown.

The children of James and Polly McBride:

Note: After reading this over and over - I wonder if James3 and Isaiah3 were the sons of an Isaiah2 McBride, son of James1?
James McBride b. Oct. 23, 1796, must not have been the first to come from Ireland - as he came with his parents. This piece was written by two sisters (granddaughters of Isaiah4[?], Blanche & Pearl were born 1880 and 1882 respectively), the first line in the book, these ladies printed, leads me to believe the line may follow as James1, Isaiah2, James3.
The family obviously settled in Guilford North Carolina, prior to coming to Orange Co., Indiana, as James McBride and Polly Milleway married in Guilford North Carolina.
Note: Guilford, North Carolina Marriage Records - Jan. 1, 1818 James McBride married Polly Milleway
Note: Guilford, North Carolina Marriage Records - July 22, 1793 - John Milleway married Elesebeth Griffin

Note: The 1880 Orange Co., Indiana Census - John McBride b. 1819 NC - lists his parents as born in NC

Obituaries

McBRIDE, James, Springs Valley Herald (November 24, 1932) Death Notice

Elmer Elsworth, son of James Wesley and Nancy Stout McBride, was born October 19, 1875, died October 29, 1935, aged 60 years and 9 days. On January 29 he became sick with a hemorrhage and was in poor health until his death yet he bore his suffering with a smile to all his family and friends until the end when he said he'd like to get well and be with us, but "If it is the Lord's will, I am ready to go."

He leaves to mourn his departure, his loving companion and aged mother, four daughters and one son; Mrs. George Brehm of Winfield, Ill.; Mrs. Gilbert Phelan of Rockford, Ill.; Mrs. William Blase of Wheaton, Ill.; Ermal and Cleo at home. He would pray and sing all through his painful sickness remaining true and faithful to the cause he served.

McBRIDE, Harriet E., Spring Valley Herald (June 2, 1921) Obituary

Harriet E. Williams was born Sept. 24, 1856, and departed this life May 23, 1921, age 64 years, 7 months and 29 days. She was united in marriage to James R. McBride Sept. 27, 1876. To this union was born 14 children, five of whom preceded her to the land beyond. She is survived by the husband, nine children and ten grandchildren.

The surviving children are Mrs. Lizzie Reedholn of Locport, Ill., Charles E. McBride of Alpine, Mich., Eva and Blanche McBride of French Lick, Mrs. Janie Simmerman and Mrs. Rose Allor, Mt. Clements, Mich., and Mrs. Grace McDonald of Washington, Ind., Mrs. Nellie Love and James McBride Jr. of Indianapolis.

The husband and children were at her bedside when the death angel came to carry her home. She had always been an earnest and devoted Christian. Five years ago she made the final surrender yielding herself wholly to her Master embracing the faith as expressed by the Methodist Church. Kind words and loving deeds characterized her life among those with whom she lived. As a neighbor she was all that could be desired. Her cheerful willingness to help those in distress and kind living ways endeared her to the entire community.

Her illness extended over a long period of time, but she bore her suffering patiently, and cheerfully. Throughout her illness she expressed her willingness to bow to the Masters will whatever it might be. Toward the last she became very eager for her Lord to take her home, where she knew eternal rest awaited her.

She told those about her that the gates would open for her and she would rest.

A few hours before her departure her face was transfigured with joy and she said to those about her, "Listen!" "Her master had callen her."

By her death the husband has lost a true devoted companion, the children a loving mother, and the community a good neighbor. Her kind words and loving deeds will be missed by all who knew her. Truly a mother in Israel has been taken from us.

Springs Valley Herald (July 25, 1929) Obituary

Eva McBride, daughter of James R. and Harriett E. McBride, was born December 9, 1879 and departed this life July 11, 1929, aged 50 years, 7 months and 2 days. She leaves to mourn her passing the father, James R. McBride of French Lick, six sisters and brothers, namely: Mrs. Charles Reidholm of Lockport, Ill., Mrs. Dale Zimmerman of New Baltimore, Mich., Mrs. Walter Allor of Mt. Clements, Mich., Mrs. Norman McDonald, of Washington, Ind., Mrs. Nellie Love and Mrs. Rolla Jones of French Lick, James V. McBride of Indianapolis and Charles McBride of Novelty, Ohio, also a host of other relatives and friends.

Eva enjoyed the usual, happy carefree life of childhood until she was eleven years old when disease fastened itself upon her and from then until the time of her death she was a constant sufferer. Never free from pain, yet always with a smile and a cheery word for those about her, her life radiated sunshine and love in the home. The strong bond of affection which existed between her and the other members of her family was indeed beautiful to see. When death took the dear mother out of this home 8 years ago, Eva, invalid though she was, filled the place left vacant in a wonderful manner, being comforter, counciler and friend to the bereft father and the brothers and sisters. She was loved as a neighbor and friend by all who knew her. Her neighbors and friends enjoyed visiting with her in her home for she never complained of her affliction. She was so kind and sympathetic with everyone that instead of going to sympathize with her, her friends took their troubles and problems of life to her for sympathy and advice.

In her going the father has lost a loving affectionate daughter who always thought of his comfort and well being above all else. The brothers and sisters a true, devoted sister who always had their welfare at heart and who made home a place where they loved to come. The other relatives and friends one who was always staunch and true and of whom it can so truthfully be said, "she was our friend." Her life so pure and spotless was an open book to all, and naught but good was found therein. Just before her passing she told those about her that she was ready to meet the final summons.

McBRIDE, Mittie Audry, Springs Valley Herald (April 10, 1919) Obituary
Mittie Audry, the only child of Ed and Roda McBride, was born in French Lick, Indiana April 27, 1909 and died March 24, 1919 where she was born at the age of 9 years, 10 months and 27 days.
Little Mittie became ill of the influenza several weeks ago and from that time she was never well. In her illness her heart became affected and she gradually grew worse until "the angels carried her home."
Mittie Audry bore her affections without complaining and was always trying to make her parents believe that she was better.
The night before she died she call her daddy and mamma and told them she was going home to Heaven and asked them to meet her there. She said several times that she was going home to Heaven in "The Good Old Fashioned Way" and in her last weakness when she could only whisper she tried to sing "The Good Old Fashioned Way", but she was too near the "Pearly Gates" and uttered only a few words of the song.
Once when she heard her parents weeping over the losing of their darling she said, "Tell my daddy and mamma that I am trying to get better." She did not want them to worry and tried to hide her weak condition from them in every way that she could.
Mittie was a devoted and loving little girl. she was very devoted to her friends and to her parents was a loving baby.
A great loss was suffered when little Mittie went to "rejoice with the angels", but He gives and at the end receives his own.

Springs Valley Herald (August 16, 1934) Obituary
Charles Elwood Dixon, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Jane McBride Dixon, was born October 10, 1857 near West Baden, Ind. and died August 6, 1934 at his home in West Baden at the age of 76 years, 9 months and 26 days.
he was the eleventh child of a family of fifteen children.
The farm now owned by T. G. Ellis about three miles east of West Baden was the Dixon home and it was there that much of not all of the married life of Thomas and Elizabeth Jane was spent and their family
reared.
The mother having died at the age of forty years, left several children of quite tender ages to be cared for by the father and older members of the family. The father's death came 14 years after the mother's at which
time the home was broken up.
At this time Charles had reached the age of twenty-one and he, with other members of the family made their home with older brothers and sisters who had married before this time.
He was married to Minnie Charles, October 6, 1901 [daughter of Wilson and Emma Davis Charles]. For a number of years he was engaged in farming, living at the Charles homestead. Later they built a new home which they and the one son, Earl, have enjoyed as only those who do where love and affection reign supremely.
In October 1913 he united with the Church of Christ at Prospect. The spirit of Christ was manifested in his life by meekness, gentleness, patience, kindness and live. He was a kind and affectionate husband and father, a good neighbor. His friends were numbered by those who knew him.
Some three years he was stricken with paralysis which eventually caused his death. All was done that loving hands could do, but to no avail. "His Lord said unto him, well done, thou good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things; enter thou into the joy of thy Lord." (Matt 25:21)
He leaves the wife, the son, one sister, Samina Dishon, who is aged and feeble; two brother-in-law with their wives, a number of nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends who mourn his passing.

The family ties between father, mother and children were strong. He united with the M. E. Church at Moores Ridge and later with his wife united with the Church of Christ at Prospect. He was a great Bible reader and realized that it was the book by which we should live believing in the great truths contained therein. That God is a God of love and mercy and one to whom we could look for comfort and reconciliation. He was a man who lived a quiet and peaceful life, laboring with his own hands to provide things honest in the sight of all men. He had many times expressed the desire that he might die at his work, though the loving Father did not call him in this way, he kept strength sufficient to walk out into the yard only an hour or two before death, though not permitted to see the dawn of peace which is dear to all the world. He is enjoying a quarter peace which passeth all understanding. He leaves a wife, three daughters, Mrs. Ida McBride of Chicago, Mrs. Lillie Ellis of Elton, La., and Mrs. Stella Coyne of West Baden, Ind., one step son, Arthur Hammond of Gary, Ind., eight grandchildren, three brothers, James and Marion of Terre Haute, Ind., Truston of Indianapolis and one sister, Sarah of Indianapolis with other relatives and many friends to mourn their loss.

Crecelius, our dear son and brother who died in defense of liberty and righteousness on October 31, 1918 age 25 years, 11 months and 14 days. He was called to the colors and left his home at French Lick, Ind., June 25, 1918 for Camp Sherman, Ohio and on Sept 8 he sailed for France. He left home so cheerful and said he wanted to go to France and wrote cheerful letters home telling us not to worry about him for he was having a good time. He went with the 84th division but later was transferred to the 91st division 362 Inf. Company I. Weaver was a kind and loving son and brother and was always kind and loving to his little nieces and nephews who were all so fond of him and not only to his relatives but seemed to be loved by all his friends and acquaintances. It is so hard to give up one who was so good and kind to us all, and he loved his home and never wanted to stay away for any length of time. He will always live in our memory and we look forward to a happy day when we will see him again, where there will be no war, but all will be peace. He leaves to mourn three brothers, four sisters, father, mother, five nieces and two nephews who were just as dear to him as his own brothers and sisters.
