Mrs. WARREN CHAPMAN KILLED IN AUTO ACCIDENT
Mrs. Warren CHAPMAN was instantly killed in an automobile accident at Wanatah Saturday afternnon. Mrs. CHAPMAN, in company with her husband and son Glen, left Knox shortly after dinner Saturday for Chicago where they expected to visit relatives over the week-end. As they approached Wanatah, an automobile driven by Mrs. BESS of that vicinity turned onto State Road 30 in the path of the CHAPMAN car. The two cars collided and from the impact the CHAPMAN car was thrown in front of a rapidly driven herse enroute to Fort Wayne.
The CHAPMAN car was struck on the right side and was practically demolished. Mrs. CHAPMAN was thrown through the top of the car and landed on the road bed several feet from the wreck. Her neck, one arm and leg were broken and she suffered a fractured skull and internal injuries.
Mr. CHAPMAN was pinned underneath the car. His right arm was broken in two places below the elbow and the flesh and ligaments were torn from the right hand.
The son Glen, who was driving the car, sustained a large scalp wound which required five stitches to close. Mrs. BESS was not injuired nor was the driver of the herse or amulance. However the ambulance which was a high powered Cadillac, was forced into the ditch some few feet from the accident.
The injured were given first-aid at Wanatah and then rushed to the Holy Family Hospital at LaPorte where the X-ray pictures were taken to learn the extent of their wounds and treatment was given.
The body of Mrs. Chapman was brought to Knox by Undertaker Hite and prepared for burial. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church Tuesday afternoon in charge of the Rev. J. W. Neill and Hugh M. Ridlen. Interment was made in Oak Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Chapman was educated in the public schools of Starke County. On September 14, 1900 she united in marriage to Warren CHAPMAN and to this union seven children were born, six of whom with the father and husband survive. One son Clifford preceeded the mother in death. She is also survived by two grandchildren, many other relatives and a wide circle of friends.
The out of town relatives were Violet PIERSON and Alvin H. CHAPMAN of Indianapolis, Mrs. G. E. KOOL of Glendora, Michigan, John CHAPMAN and his family. Mr. & Mrs. LaVerne CHAPMAN and Mr. & Mrs. Everett CHAPMAN, all of South Bend. Mr. & Mrs. Walter F. CHAPMAN of Bellwood, Illinois, Mr. & Mrs. Peter SPEELMON of Fort Wayne.
